Hey All! Mike here to give you the skinny on the latest tasty food emporium Katie and I visited: a quaint little breakfast place called The Wooden Spoon in the small town of Ashford, CT.
Katie & I took a trip with my parents up to my aunt and uncle's log cabin in Eastford, CT this past weekend. Their place is very beautiful and serene, which was pretty cool since it was snowing over there this weekend--adding to the already established log-cabin old-timey vibe.
On Sunday, they wanted to take us to the great breakfast place near them called The Wooden Spoon.
I had a feeling Katie would enjoy this place, since every time we cook together, a wooden spoon is her weapon of choice. It's her signature style, and I'm sure she'd try to get spaghetti out of a pot with one if she could; so the name of the restaurant was already points awarded towards it.
There were only 11 tables in the place. We had arrived there around 11:15, so the breakfast rush was dying down and we didn't have to wait for a table. Having heard that the place was so tiny, I was thinking they'd have a limited menu. However, this wasn't the case! While their menu wasn't a novel, it definitely had a lot of options. That being said, my eyes still went to the specials board when I sat down.
Peering at the specials, the first thing that stood out to me was a Chili Cheese Omelette. I thought to myself "that sounds tasty. But, maybe you should look over the rest of the menu first." I saw some other good-sounding items, and debated Eggs Benedict or Eggs Florentine (my aunt, uncle, and dad would all go for these options). Katie turned to me and mentioned that the Chili Cheese Omelette sounded like it was right up my alley. I decided "that's it, I'm getting it!" My dad ended up getting Eggs Florentine and asked if we could do our "normal split."
Now, it's been a tradition for me and my dad that when we would go out for breakfast, he would get Eggs Benedict and I would get an omelette, and we would basically split that down the middle: each ending up with one Egg Benedict & half a tasty omelette. It's been a while since my dad and I did this, so I figured "why not!"
Katie was looking over the menu and having the same "what should I get?" debate. Ultimately, she went were her classic "poison of choice": Chocolate Chip Pancakes.
While we were waiting for the food, I noticed this shaker on the table that had red chili flakes and some kind of other spice-rub looking thing in it. In retrospect, it smelled a bit like Emeril's Essence. Either way, I looked forward to trying it on the omelette.
So, let me just cut to the chase and say that the omelette was delicious! I'm not a big fan of the "anyone can cook an omelette" argument, because not everyone can! I've been to some restaurants whose omelettes were quite disappointing.
At The Wooden Spoon, the omelette was perfectly cooked. Initially, I was worried about it being too flimsy to hold in the chili/cheese combo. But, that definitely wasn't the case. It was thin enough to allow for a great amount of filling, while being strong enough to hold it all in so you didn't end up with scrambled-eggs with chili and cheese on your plate. I'm not too positive if the Chili was homemade. Unfortunately, I didn't ask. It tasted great though, and given the homecooked vibe of the place, I would bet on it being made from scratch.
The Egg Florentine I had was also good. Yet again, the poached egg on top was done just to my liking.
Oh, and let me just say that spice-combo dealy on the table was very tasty. Again, I'm not sure what it is, but if you're at The Wooden Spoon, try putting it on your eggs. Good times!
Katie's Chocolate Chip Pancakes were quite good too. However, we both agreed that we enjoy the ones at Maureen's Kitchen (don't worry, we'll blog about that soon!) slightly better. This could just be our hometown-pride showing through. Overall though, they were still done very well! There was also this locally made Maple Syrup that was a very good touch. So fresh.
To me, The Wooden Spoon is just what a breakfast joint should be: small, homey, comforting, and with fresh tasty food. The owner (whose name I didn't catch) also seemed very nice. He came over to talk to my uncle, and while I would have liked to introduce myself and say "hey, we have a food blog and plan on writing about your place!" I didn't. ::sighh:: Next time, Mike. Next time.
Come back soon for more food adventures! I'll bother Katie about writing the next post. That goil's gotta get her toes wet in this here food blogging sauce!
Yuck. That sounds unappetizing. Hmmmm. I'll think of a better promotion before I talk to her, I promise.
With Loving Tastebuds,
- Mike
